Hey just got back from a handicapped tourney and me and my dad won. of course, then you have to hear the sandbagging crap, cuz we got 2nd last year too. of course I'm a 16 and shot a 98 today on a course rating of 69.9 and a par of 70, slope 119. My dad did shoot 86 though and he is a 20, he played out of his ass. but this tourney was usga rules, play it down and all that good stuff, just like me and my dad always play. We always play it down and never take gimmes. Well everyone else out there does that rolling crap and gives everyone 3 and 4 footers. Anybody have a stat on how much doing that probably saves a round, id say 3 or 4 strokes per 18. Id say playing it down costs you at least 2.7 strokes per round of 18 compared to rolling it, and then .3 at least for putting it out. Matt, I tried to find a stat for you but failed. I did find that at the Kemper Open last year(?) that they played lift clean and place one day and that the field averaged more than one stroke better because of it. Now that was only improving the lie in the fairway. You are talking about people moving it in the rough as well which means no flyer lies, obstructions, bare lies, sticks, rocks or plants to deal with. This is absoultely worth 4-5 strokes to a 18 handicapper.
In regards to the putting: Dave Pelz states in his books that PGA pros make 50% of the 6 foot putts they face in tournaments. Those are on the worlds fastest, albeit purest, greens imaginable but also under extreme pressure. I would guess that the average 18 handicapper makes roughly 50% of his 4 footers simply due to poor mechanics and green reading skills. If this is remotely accurate, then the six four footers that I seem to have every round would result in at least 2 and probably 3 missed putts. Obviously raking them in saves those strokes.
On a different note, when I play in tournaments, the average score of most contestants is higher than one would expect with their handicaps and I hear endless laments of missed 2 footers and shitty lies against rocks and embedded items.... this leads me to believe that they feel victimized by their bad luck which is how one would feel if they never played those lies in a normal round! My personal observation of my friends and golfing experiences is that enforcing the rules adds six strokes per round to their games. Hope this helps...........

thanks for your help, I couldnt find a stat anywhere as well, I did talk to some club pros online and asked them if they thought 3 was a fair estimate. They said they thought it was low and it was more like 4 to 5. I think I ought to post a flyer out at the golf course mentioning that or something.
